Hello everyone, and welcome to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end Type 2 diabetes one family at a time through education, support, and empowerment.
If this is our first time meeting, my name is Renee. I am an Emotional Eating and Diabetes Lifestyle Coach and Yoga Teacher, and I help adults over 40 diagnosed with prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes lower their blood sugar, lose weight, and increase their mobility without starving themselves or spending hours a day in the gym.
Today is Day One of my 10 Day Sprint. I recently started a series called Back to Me, where I’ll document the steps I’m taking to get back on track, because even coaches need a reset now and then. Today, I want to talk about the first step in my comeback.
Reflection
I believe reflection is one of the most overlooked parts of any wellness journey. In fact, it’s the first exercise I ask my coaching clients to complete before we ever talk about meal plans, walking programs, or weight loss goals.
Why?
Because reflection helps you do three important things.
- First, it helps you understand how you got where you are.
- Second, it helps you decide where you truly want to go.
- Third, it helps you create a realistic plan to get there.
Too often, we make health decisions in panic mode. The weight comes back. Our blood sugar starts creeping up, our mobility declines. Our clothes fit differently. We leave the doctor’s office feeling discouraged, and suddenly we’re trying to change everything overnight. I’ve been there.
When we panic, we often create plans that are too big, too restrictive, and too difficult to sustain. Reflection slows us down. It helps reduce the overwhelm. It quiets the panic. It helps us avoid saying, “I wish I had done this differently.” I also think many of us avoid reflection because it forces us to admit we’ve taken a wrong turn.
That isn’t always comfortable. I know it hasn’t been for me. But I’ve learned something important. Acknowledging where you are isn’t the same as giving up. It’s the beginning of taking back your power. So here’s what I’m doing today. I’m sitting down with a notebook and answering three simple questions.
- How did I get here?
- Where do I want to go?
- How am I going to get there?
Then I’m going to create my comeback plan. And before I get up from that chair, I’m going to give myself a big hug because shame has never helped anyone build a healthier life. I’d love for you to join me. Take a few quiet moments today and answer those same three questions. You don’t have to solve everything today. You have to begin.
