Five Signs Your Blood Sugar May Be Affecting Your Vision: What Every Adult with Prediabetes or Type 2 Diabetes Should Know

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time through education, support, and empowerment.

If this is our first-time meeting, my name is Renee. I am an emotional eating and diabetes lifestyle coach and yoga teacher. I help adults over 40 with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes lower their blood sugar, lose weight, and improve mobility without extreme dieting or spending hours in the gym.

Today, we’re talking about five signs your blood sugar may be affecting your vision.

When most people think about diabetes, they think about blood sugar numbers. But one area that often gets overlooked is eye health. High blood sugar can affect the tiny blood vessels in your eyes, sometimes long before you notice serious vision problems. Recognizing the warning signs early can help you seek care sooner and protect your eyesight.

Here are five signs to pay attention to:

1. Blurry Vision

If your vision seems blurry or changes from day to day, fluctuating blood sugar may be the cause. High blood sugar can temporarily change the shape of the eye’s lens, making it difficult to focus clearly.

2. Difficulty Seeing at Night

Do you find yourself struggling to see while driving after dark or moving around in dimly lit rooms? Night vision problems can sometimes be associated with diabetes-related eye changes and should be discussed with your eye care provider.

3. Frequent Changes in Your Prescription

If it feels like you need stronger glasses every year, or even more often, it may be worth asking whether your blood sugar is contributing to those changes. Stable blood sugar often supports more stable vision.

4. Floaters or Dark Spots

Occasional floaters are common as we age, but a sudden increase in floaters, dark spots, flashes of light, or a shadow over your vision requires immediate medical attention. These symptoms can sometimes signal a serious eye condition.

5. Eye Fatigue or Difficulty Focusing

If your eyes tire easily while reading, working on the computer, or watching television, don’t ignore it. Eye strain can have many causes, including blood sugar-related changes.

The important thing to remember is that many diabetes-related eye conditions develop without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. That’s why annual diabetic eye exams are one of the best ways to protect your vision, even if you think your eyesight is fine.
