What to do When Stress Starts Changing Your Daily Habits

Hello, my friend, and welcome to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end Type 2 diabetes, one family at a time, through education, support, and empowerment. If this is our first time meeting, my name is Renee. I am an emotional eating and diabetes lifestyle coach and yoga teacher. Yesterday, we talked about why we need to pay more attention to our stress levels as we build our wellness journey.

Today, we are talking about what happens when ongoing stress starts influencing our sleep, eating, movement, energy, and blood sugar all at the same time. Stress itself isn’t the enemy. We are going to experience stress. We have jobs, families, bills, relationships, responsibilities, health concerns, and unexpected things that happen simply because we are living our lives. The goal isn’t to create a life where nothing ever bothers us.

The problem begins when stress follows us everywhere. We take it to dinner. We take it to bed. We wake up with it. We carry it into work. Eventually, we may start making choices based on how exhausted, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained we feel. That’s the part I want us to pay attention to, because sometimes what looks like a discipline problem is really a signal that we need to look at the bigger picture.

Stress Can Create a Chain Reaction

Think about how this can happen. You have a stressful day and go to bed with your mind racing. You don’t sleep well, so you wake up exhausted. You’re looking for energy, so you reach for a large coffee and something sweet. By lunchtime, you’re hungry, tired, and trying to get through the rest of the day. You had planned to take a walk after work, but now you’re exhausted, so you decide you’ll do it tomorrow. Dinner needs to be quick because you don’t have the energy to cook. Later that evening, you reach for something salty or sweet while you sit on the sofa trying to decompress. Then you go to bed, your mind starts racing again, and the cycle begins the next day again. Does any of this sound familiar? It certainly does to me.

That is why I don’t want us looking at every individual choice and immediately deciding we just need more willpower. Stress can affect blood glucose directly through the body’s hormonal response, but it can also affect the everyday behaviors that influence our health. Sleep, food choices, physical activity, energy, and emotional eating don’t exist in separate little boxes. They affect one another. If you’re trying to lower your blood sugar or lose weight and you keep struggling to do the things you know you want to do, instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” try asking a more useful question: “What is making this harder for me right now?” Your answer might show you where to begin.

Break the Cycle Somewhere

Here’s the good news. You don’t have to fix the entire chain at once. Find one place where you can interrupt it. Maybe tonight you put your phone down thirty minutes before bed. Have you prepared breakfast before you go to sleep so you’re not making that decision while exhausted tomorrow morning? Or you take five minutes to stretch and breathe before dinner. How about you put on your shoes and walk for ten minutes after you eat. That walk doesn’t have to solve every problem in your life. It can simply be one small way of telling yourself, “I’m taking care of myself today.” And if you’re ready to turn those ten minutes into a consistent walking routine, that’s where my 30-Day Walking & Blood Sugar Challenge can help. You don’t have to figure out how much to walk or what to do next because I’ve already created the plan for you. Thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me today. Let us know in the comments: When you’re under a lot of stress, where do you notice the chain reaction first? Is it your sleep, your eating, your energy, your movement, or something else?
