Mindset Matters: How Changing Your Thoughts Can Help You Take Control of Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time through education, support, and empowerment.  If this is our first time meeting, my name is Renee. I am an emotional eating and diabetes lifestyle coach and yoga teacher, and I help folks over 40 diagnosed with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes lower their blood sugar, lose weight, and increase mobility without starving themselves or spending hours a day in the gym.

Today, we’re talking about why changing your mindset is one of the most important steps in creating a wellness lifestyle that lasts.

When a Great Plan Isn’t Enough

For years, I thought the answer was finding the perfect plan.  I bought the journals. I highlighted the meal plans. I listened to motivational podcasts on my morning commute. Every Monday felt like a fresh start. This was going to be the week everything changed.  But then life would happen.

A stressful day at work. Another argument with my soon-to-be ex-husband. The exhaustion that settles into your bones after you have worked twelve hours, taking care of everyone except yourself. I would come home, lie on the sofa, turn on my favorite British mystery, and reach for something to eat.

Not because I was hungry.  Because I was tired. Because I was overwhelmed. Because food felt easier than dealing with the crap I was carrying.  What made it even harder was the fear lurking in the background. Was my prediabetes going to develop into type 2 diabetes?   Was I going to end up like my mother, giving myself insulin shots every day? Had my future already been decided?  So I would make another plan. Start again. Fall off again.  Maybe you’ve lived some version of that story too.

The Real Problem Wasn’t Food

What I eventually learned through working with my coach and therapist surprised me.  My biggest obstacle was not a lack of information.  I knew what healthy foods looked like. I knew exercise was important. I knew sleep mattered.  The real struggle was the conversation happening inside my own head.  Every time I tried to make a change, old beliefs would show up.

  • “I’ve failed every diet I’ve ever tried.”
  • “Diabetes is inevitable.”
  • “I’m too old to change.”

Those thoughts felt true because I had repeated them to myself for years. They became the lens through which I viewed every setback, every challenge, and every attempt to improve my health.  The moment something went wrong, those beliefs rushed in to confirm what I already feared about myself.

See, when you believe failure is waiting around every corner, one difficult day feels like proof that you cannot succeed.  When you believe your future is already written, it becomes difficult to fight for a different outcome.  And when you believe change belongs to younger people, every birthday feels like another reason to give up. The weight of those beliefs is heavy. They drain your energy long before you ever step on a scale or check your blood sugar.

Keeping Promises to Yourself Changes Everything

One of the most powerful lessons I learned was that confidence does not come from motivation.  Confidence comes from trust.  Specifically, trust in yourself.  For years, I kept making promises that were impossible to sustain. I would tell myself I was going to change my life completely overnight. Then, when I could not maintain that pace, I felt disappointed, discouraged, and ashamed.

What finally helped was learning to focus on promises I could actually keep.  A promise might be taking a ten-minute walk after dinner.  A promise might be preparing breakfast before work.  A promise might be drinking water before reaching for a snack.  Every time you follow through, you send yourself a message.  “I can count on myself.”

That message matters.  Because every promise kept becomes evidence against the old story that says you always quit.  Every promise kept challenges the belief that change is impossible.  Every promise kept helps build a new identity, one based on trust rather than criticism.  And trust is what carries you through the days when motivation disappears.

Becoming the Person You Dream of Being

Many people think they need to become healthier before they can feel proud of themselves.  I believe the opposite is true.  The journey begins when you start treating yourself like someone worth caring for right now.  Not twenty pounds from now.  Not after your next doctor’s appointment.  Not after your blood sugar reaches a certain number.  Right now.

The woman who dreams about wearing the sundress hanging in her closet deserves compassion today.  The man who is worried about his latest A1C deserves encouragement today.  The person who has started and stopped more wellness plans than they can count deserves another chance today.

Mindset work is not about pretending life is easy.  It is about learning to challenge the stories that keep you stuck.  It is about recognizing that a difficult chapter is not the same thing as a permanent ending.  And it is about understanding that your thoughts influence your actions far more than any meal plan ever will.

When you begin changing the way you speak to yourself, you create space for different choices. Those choices can lead to different outcomes. And those outcomes can create a life that once felt completely out of reach.

One Action to Take Today

Before you move on with your day, I want you to grab a piece of paper and write down one belief you have about yourself that may be holding you back.

Maybe it is:

  • “I’ve failed every diet I’ve ever tried.”
  • “Diabetes is inevitable.”
  • “I’m too old to change.”

Then ask yourself one simple question:  “Is this a fact, or is this a story I’ve been telling myself?”

Be honest with your answer.  Awareness is often where transformation begins.  You cannot change a belief you have never examined.

If there is one thing I hope you take away from today’s conversation, it is this: your mindset matters. The plans, recipes, workouts, and strategies all have value. But none of them can overcome beliefs that constantly tell you change is impossible.

I know because I lived it.  I spent years believing I lacked willpower when the real issue was that I was carrying fear, exhaustion, disappointment, and old stories that no longer served me.  The good news is that beliefs are not permanent. They can be challenged. They can be questioned. They can be replaced.  Your past attempts do not define your future.

One difficult season does not determine the rest of your life.  And no matter where you are today, you can begin writing a different story.  One promise. One decision. One thought at a time.  So before we wrap up, I want to leave you with a resource to help you take action.
