Confusion Around What to Eat After Diagnosis

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time through education, support, and empowerment. If this is our first time meeting, my name is Renee. I am an emotional eating and diabetes lifestyle coach and yoga teacher, and I help folks over 40 diagnosed with prediabetes or type two diabetes lower their blood sugar, lose weight, and increase mobility without starving themselves or spending hours a day in the gym.

Today is part three of our Men’s Diabetes Blueprint series. On day one, we talked about the numbers every man should know. Yesterday, we talked about erectile dysfunction and diabetes, and how it is not just a sexual issue. Today, we are talking about what you eat, eating like your life depends on it, because it does.

When someone is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the first question I hear is always the same. What do I eat now? That question usually comes with frustration, confusion, and sometimes fear. There is so much conflicting information out there that it becomes overwhelming. One person says cut carbs completely, another says count calories, and someone else is pushing the latest trend. Without a clear approach, eating starts to feel like a daily struggle instead of something that supports your health.

Why Diets Fail, and Blood Sugar Stays High

Here is where things get even more frustrating. Many people try to follow strict diets that are hard to maintain in real life. They might see temporary changes, but without understanding how food actually affects blood sugar, those changes do not last. Meals become inconsistent, energy levels fluctuate, and blood sugar continues to spike and drop throughout the day.

Food and water are two things you interact with every single day. They are not occasional choices. They are constant. And when you do not have the right tools to manage them, it can feel like you are always guessing. This guessing game shows up as cravings, fatigue, and that feeling of never quite getting it right. It also impacts performance, whether that is at work, in the gym, or just having the energy to get through your day. When blood sugar is not stable, everything feels harder than it needs to be.

A Simple Framework That Actually Works

Let’s simplify this. You do not need a complicated diet. You need a strategy.

Think about building your meals around three key components. Protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Protein helps stabilize blood sugar and keeps you feeling full. Fiber slows down how quickly sugar enters your bloodstream, which helps prevent spikes. Healthy fats support satiety and help your body use energy more efficiently.

Now let’s talk about the difference between foods that spike blood sugar and those that help stabilize it. Highly processed foods, sugary drinks, and refined carbohydrates tend to cause rapid increases in blood sugar. On the other hand, whole foods like lean proteins, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and healthy oils support more balanced blood sugar levels.

This does not have to be expensive or complicated. Eating well on a budget is possible when you focus on simple staples. Eggs, canned beans, frozen vegetables, oats, brown rice, and affordable cuts of protein can all be part of a balanced approach. It is not about having perfect meals. It is about building meals that support your body in a practical way that fits your life.

Tired of watching your blood sugar stay high, struggling with cravings, low energy, emotional eating, and feeling frustrated every time you try to figure out what to eat? My 4 Week Emotional Eating and Blood Sugar Reset was created to help you lower your numbers, lose weight, and feel more in control of your health with a simple, realistic plan that fits your everyday life. Start Where You Are and Build From There

This is your invitation to approach food differently. Not as something to fear or overthink, but as a tool that can support your health and your performance every single day. Start by looking at your plate. Ask yourself if you have protein, fiber, and healthy fats included. Pay attention to how you feel after eating. Your body will give you feedback if you are willing to notice it.

And if you are supporting someone through this, encourage simple changes. You do not need to overhaul everything overnight. What matters is creating meals that are balanced and satisfying so that your body has what it needs to function well.

So if you have been listening to this and thinking, “Okay,  this makes sense, but I still do not know how to actually do this day to day,” I want you to know that is completely normal. Knowing what to do is one thing, but doing it, especially when you are dealing with cravings, habits, and a busy life, is where most people feel stuck.

And that is exactly why I created my 4-week Emotional Eating and Blood Sugar Reset. If you are over 40 and tired of trying to figure out what to eat, dealing with cravings, or watching your blood sugar stay higher than you would like, I will walk you step by step through a simple, realistic plan to help you lower your numbers, lose weight, and feel more in control of your eating without extreme diets or starting over. Food Is the Foundation of Your Health

What you eat every day has a direct impact on your blood sugar, your energy, and your overall health. This is not about following a strict plan that leaves you feeling deprived. It is about understanding how food works in your body and using that knowledge to support yourself.

When you shift from following random advice to using a clear and simple framework, everything becomes more manageable. Meals feel less stressful. Energy becomes more steady. Your body starts responding in a way that supports the life you want to live.

This is about eating like it matters, because it does. Not just for your blood sugar, but for your strength, your focus, your relationships, and your future.

As we continue this series, we are going to keep building on this and give you practical ways to apply this in your everyday life.

And if this episode helped you, send it to someone who is struggling with their blood sugar, too. I promise they will thank you for it.

Until next time, take care of yourself and each other,
With Peace and Love,
Renee
