When You Don’t Know Your Numbers, You’re Guessing
Hello everyone, and welcome to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time through education, support, and empowerment. If this is our first time meeting, my name is Renee. I am an emotional eating and diabetes lifestyle coach and yoga teacher, and I help folks over 40 diagnosed with prediabetes or type two diabetes lower their blood sugar, lose weight, and move with more ease without living in the gym or cutting out everything they enjoy.
Today, we are beginning our five-part series, The Men’s Diabetes Blueprint. This first conversation is about something many men avoid until it becomes unavoidable: knowing your numbers. I created this series from a deeply personal place. I lost both my dad and my younger brother to heart disease. That kind of loss changes how you see everything. It makes you realize how many warning signs were there long before the crisis. Many men move through life without regular checkups, brushing off fatigue, weight gain, or changes in performance as just part of getting older. But without clear numbers, you are left guessing, and guessing with your health can come at a very high cost.
The Silent Signals Most Men Miss
What we do not talk about enough is that conditions like high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and unhealthy cholesterol levels often develop quietly. There is no loud alarm. Instead, the body sends whispers. Maybe it shows up as low energy, stubborn belly weight, or even erectile dysfunction. These are not isolated issues. They are deeply connected.
Blood sugar markers like A1C, fasting glucose, and post-meal readings give a picture of how your body is handling sugar over time and in real-life situations. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels tell you how your heart and blood vessels are holding up under that load. Waist circumference and visceral fat, the fat stored deep around your organs, are some of the strongest predictors of future diabetes and heart disease risk.
When these numbers are off, the body is under stress, and that stress shows up in ways many men do not expect. Erectile dysfunction, for example, which we will discuss more tomorrow, is often an early sign of blood vessel damage, not just a separate issue. When you connect the dots, it becomes clear that these numbers are not just data. They are signals asking for attention.
What Every Man Needs to Track and Why It Matters
Let’s break this down in a way that feels practical and clear. First, your A1C reflects your average blood sugar over about three months. It gives a big picture view. Fasting glucose tells you where your blood sugar sits after not eating, often first thing in the morning. Post-meal numbers show how your body responds after eating, which is where many people see their biggest spikes.
Next, blood pressure and cholesterol. These are often called silent killers because they can be high without noticeable symptoms. Yet they are major contributors to heart disease and stroke, and they directly impact circulation. That includes circulation needed for sexual health, which is why so many men experience changes there before anything else.
Then there is waist circumference. This one is simple but powerful. Carrying excess weight around the midsection is strongly linked to insulin resistance. It is not just about appearance. It is about what is happening internally. In the United States, nearly forty percent of men are living with obesity, and many do not realize how closely that ties into diabetes risk. When you start tracking these numbers and understanding what they mean, you move from reacting to problems to actually seeing them early and doing something about them.
A Different Way Forward
So if you are a man over 40, or you love and support a man over 40, this is your invitation to stay with this series. These conversations are not about fear. They are about awareness, ownership, and making informed choices that support a longer, stronger life. Going to the doctor, asking questions, and knowing your numbers is not a sign of weakness. It is one of the most powerful forms of self-respect you can show yourself.
And if you have been listening to this and thinking, “Okay, I hear this, but I still do not know how to make this part of my everyday life,” I want you to know that you are not alone in that feeling. Knowing what matters is one thing. Living it out, especially with habits, cravings, and a full schedule, is where many people feel overwhelmed. That is exactly why I created my 4-week Emotional Eating and Blood Sugar Reset.
If you are over 40 and tired of guessing what to eat, dealing with cravings, or watching your blood sugar stay higher than you would like, I will walk you step by step through a simple and realistic plan. This is about helping you lower your numbers, lose weight, and feel more in control of your eating in a way that fits your life. Click this link to join.
Awareness Is the Turning Point
This first session is your foundation. Before any meal plan, workout routine, or lifestyle shift, there has to be awareness. Numbers give you clarity. They tell a story about what is happening inside your body long before a crisis forces your attention. When you understand your A1C, your daily blood sugar patterns, your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your waist measurement, you are no longer in the dark. You are informed, and that changes how you show up for your health.
For many men, the hardest step is simply deciding to look. To schedule the appointment. To ask for the labs. To face what the results say. But that moment of facing the truth can also be the moment everything begins to shift. It is not about doing everything at once. It is about becoming aware and choosing to respond with care instead of avoidance.
As we move through this series, we will build on this foundation together. We will talk about food, movement, habits, and mindset in ways that feel real and doable. But it all starts here, with knowing your numbers and understanding what they mean for your life.
Please share this post with someone you love. You never know whose life it might impact.
Until next time, take care of yourself and each other.
With Peace and Love,
Renee
