Listen to Episode 56 of The Diabetic Toolbox Podcast: Why Diabetes Can Wreck Your Skin (And What You Can Do About It)
Hello, everyone, and welcome to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time. Today, we are starting our April ten-day skincare challenge. We will dive deep into how to care for your skin while managing diabetes.
Most people with diabetes don’t realize how closely their skin is tied to blood sugar control. But here’s the truth: when your blood sugar is consistently high, your skin is often the first to show signs that something’s out of balance.
How High Blood Sugar Damages the Skin
When blood sugar levels remain elevated for too long, it affects the small blood vessels and nerves that nourish the skin. Poor circulation means your skin doesn’t get the nutrients and hydration it needs to stay healthy. Over time, this can lead to dryness, infections, and slower healing of cuts or sores.
High blood sugar also impacts collagen production, making the skin less elastic and more prone to thinning and wrinkling. It even compromises the skin’s ability to act as a barrier, allowing harmful bacteria in and moisture out.
Common Skin Conditions Linked to Diabetes
People with diabetes are more likely to experience a variety of skin issues, such as:
- Dry, itchy skin (especially on the legs and feet)
- Fungal infections, like athlete’s foot and yeast infections
- Bacterial infections, including styes and boils
- Diabetic dermopathy, which shows up as light brown, scaly patches on the legs
- Slow-healing wounds that can become dangerous if not treated properly
These conditions aren’t just uncomfortable; they can lead to serious complications if ignored.
Two Simple Habits to Protect Your Skin
The good news? There are simple things you can do every day to protect your skin and keep it healthy:
1. Hydrate Inside and Out
Drink plenty of water and use a good-quality, fragrance-free moisturizer daily, especially after bathing. Hydrated skin is more resilient and less likely to crack or itch.
2. Check Your Skin Daily
Make it a habit to inspect your body, especially your feet and legs, for any new cuts, bumps, rashes, or changes in color. Early detection is key to preventing infections from spiraling into more serious issues.
Caring for your skin isn’t just about appearance; it’s about prevention, protection, and peace of mind. By understanding how high blood sugar impacts your skin and building daily habits around hydration and awareness, you’re giving your body the care it deserves. Small steps lead to significant changes, and your skin will thank you for every bit of love and attention you give it.
