I remember speaking with someone who came to one of my workshops; she had her lab results folded. She kept tapping the paper like it might suddenly change. Her doctor had just told her she was in the prediabetes range. She looked up at me and said, “I didn’t even feel sick. How did this happen?”
That moment has stayed with me, because it is happening more and more. Unexpected conversations. People who feel fine are being told something in their body has shifted. Today, we’re talking about why prediabetes is showing up earlier in 2026 and what you can do about it.
When the Diagnosis Feels Like It Came Out of Nowhere
More adults are walking into routine appointments and walking out with a word they did not expect to hear. Prediabetes. There is often no dramatic warning sign. No big moment that says something is wrong. It might be a little fatigue after meals, a craving for sweets in the evening, or weight that settles around the belly and refuses to move. Easy to brush off. Easy to explain away.
So when the doctor says your blood sugar is elevated, it can feel confusing. Even frustrating. Especially if you believe you have been doing your best. I find that this is where many folks get stuck. Not because they do not care, but because they do not fully understand what their body has been trying to communicate.
The World We Are Living In Is Working Against You
Let’s be honest about daily life right now. Long hours sitting. Meals that are rushed or grabbed on the go. Stress that does not really turn off. Sleep that gets pushed aside. And then food becomes comfort, distraction, or relief at the end of a long day. This is not about willpower. It is about patterns that slowly shape how your body responds to sugar and insulin over time.
And emotional eating adds another layer. When food becomes a way to cope, it is no longer just about hunger. It is about feelings that have not been processed. It is about habits that formed quietly over the years. So when prediabetes shows up, it is not random. It is the result of many small moments adding up. And without understanding those moments, it is easy to feel stuck and unsure of what to do next.
What Your Body Is Really Asking For
Prediabetes is your body’s early warning signal that something needs attention. It is not here to scare you. It is here to get your focus. Your body is having a harder time moving glucose out of your bloodstream and into your cells. That is where insulin comes in. When your cells stop responding as well, sugar begins to build up in the blood.
The encouraging part is that your body is incredibly responsive when you begin to support it differently. Start with your meals. Think balance, not extremes. Protein, fiber, and healthy fats work together to help keep your blood sugar steady.
Movement matters more than intensity. A short walk after meals can help your body use glucose more effectively. Strength training supports how your body responds to insulin. Sleep is not optional. It directly impacts your hormones and your cravings.
And then there is emotional eating. This is where real transformation happens. Learning to pause, to notice what you are feeling, and to respond with care instead of reacting on autopilot. These are not overwhelming changes. They are intentional shifts that meet you where you are.
A Different Way Forward
