Staying Aware & Centered When Holiday Chaos Takes Over

Hello friend, it’s Renee here from the diabetic toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time, through education, support, and empowerment.

Because let’s be honest, the holidays can be joyful, but they can also be stressful, busy, noisy, and emotionally heavy.

Lack of Awareness

  • When you’re not tuned in to what your body needs, rest, balanced meals, hydration, or stress relief, it becomes much easier for blood sugar to swing out of range.
  • A lack of awareness of habits, triggers, and emotional cues can lead to mindless eating or skipped routines, both of which can undermine stable glucose control.

So let’s walk through a simple, powerful way to stay centered this season.

First: mindful check-ins.  And I don’t mean anything complicated.
Just pause for a moment, place a hand on your chest or your stomach, and ask yourself:
“What do I need right now?”

Is it food?
 Is it rest?
Is it a moment of space?
 Is it movement?
 Is it hydration?

Most of us spend the holidays reacting to plans, people, food, noise, comments, and expectations. But when you stop for even 10 seconds, your whole nervous system shifts from reaction mode to awareness mode.
And that awareness can prevent emotional eating, burnout, irritability, and blood sugar spikes.

The second step is creating your anchor routine.
This is SO important during the holidays, because everything around you is unpredictable.  But your routine, your anchor, is something you can rely on.

Maybe it’s a gentle stretch in the morning.
 Maybe it’s a protein-rich breakfast.
Maybe it’s stepping outside for five minutes of fresh air.
Or an evening ritual where you put the phone away, drink water, and breathe deeply.

These small anchors remind your body and mind that you’re safe, grounded, and in control of your choices.

And the third piece:
 Pause before choices.
Before you reach for another holiday treat…
Before you react to a comment…
Before you commit to something you don’t have energy for…

Stop.  Take five deep breaths.

You’d be amazed at how much clarity can show up in those five breaths.
 You can ask yourself:
“Is this choice going to support my energy? My blood sugar? My peace? My goals?”
Not with judgment,  but with compassion.

This pause helps you move from impulsive decisions to intentional ones.
And that one habit can change the entire holiday experience.

Remember: you are allowed to slow down.
You’re allowed to put your well-being first.
You’re allowed to step back from chaos and choose peace, presence, and authenticity.

The holidays don’t have to overwhelm you.
They don’t have to pull you out of alignment.
You get to decide how much energy you put into it and where you place your focus.

And this season, I hope you choose yourself.
Not out of selfishness, but out of self-respect.

You deserve a grounded, peaceful holiday.  And you’re more capable of creating that than you realize.
