Hey beautiful people,
It’s Renee here from The Diabetic Toolbox, where our mission is to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time through education, support, and empowerment. Today, we’re talking about something many of us experience, especially during the holidays, loneliness.
Loneliness isn’t just an emotional feeling. It can influence our health in real ways:
- It increases stress hormones
- It can trigger emotional eating
- It may raise blood sugar levels
- And it can make healthy routines harder to maintain
When you feel isolated, things like movement, meal planning, and glucose monitoring start to slip, and those small shifts can add up.
So before we go deeper, I want to offer a gentle reminder: Feeling lonely doesn’t mean you’re broken, failing, or unlovable. Loneliness is information, not a judgment.
A signal that something needs to change.
My Own Holiday Journey With Loneliness
The holidays have become increasingly difficult for me. I’m navigating empty nest syndrome, divorce, and the passing of key family members. These shifts have changed how the holidays feel, and maybe you’re experiencing something similar.
What I’m learning is this: We grow up thinking loneliness is something to hide or feel ashamed of, but the truth is…
It’s one of the most human emotions in the world. And during the holidays, when commercials, movies, and social feeds show big smiling families, our brains start to compare. And comparison is the quickest path to disconnection.
So today, I want to guide you through three gentle steps to help you reconnect with yourself, others, and your health.
Acknowledge the Feeling Without Judgment
Try saying: “I’m feeling lonely right now, and that’s okay.” Notice what happens when you say “I feel lonely” instead of “I am lonely.” Those two little words, I feel, give you space. They remind you that emotions are visitors, not permanent residents. This shift alone reduces stress and grounds your nervous system, which can support more stable blood sugar.
Create One Small Moment of Connection
This doesn’t mean forcing yourself into social situations or pretending everything is fine. It means doing something small. Authentic. Manageable.
- Send a simple text: “Hey, thinking of you today.”
- Call someone who always lifts you.
- Step outside, make eye contact with someone, offer a smile, and let that tiny moment count.
Connection doesn’t have to be big or dramatic. Sometimes the smallest moments bring us back to life. And connection, no matter how small, supports emotional well-being, which supports metabolic well-being.
Create a Comfort Ritual
This is where nourishment and self-care meet. A comfort ritual is something you do for you, by you, and with you.
Try
- Making a warm cup of tea or hot cocoa
- Dimming the lights and turning on a candle or fireplace video
- Wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket
- Playing music that tells your nervous system, “You’re safe.”
Then open a journal, not to write a novel, to reflect gently:
- What am I grateful for today?
- What brought me comfort?
- What am I proud of myself for?
Gratitude won’t erase loneliness, but it will remind you that you’re connected to something bigger. And that sense of connection grows with practice.
A Message for Your Heart
If you’ve been feeling isolated
You are not alone.
You are human.
You are navigating life, health, emotions, and the holidays all at once.
Take a deep breath.
Offer yourself kindness.
Remember: connection starts within.
And you, my friend
You are doing better than you think.
