Welcome back to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type two diabetes one family at a time.
When I received my prediabetes diagnosis back in 2017, my immediate reaction was panic. Like many of you, I wanted answers quickly, and in my quest to reverse my prediabetes, I ran straight to the health food store and loaded my cart with every supplement and vitamin I thought could help. Before I knew it, I was swallowing about seven different pills a day and blending up a protein smoothie with added collagen every morning.
My supplement list included everything from a daily multivitamin to vitamin D3, iron, vitamin C, calcium, and magnesium, just to name a few. But was this approach really necessary? Did it help? Or was I simply overwhelmed and possibly overdoing it?
If you find yourself stuck in supplement overload, today’s blog post is especially for you.
Do You Really Need Supplements?
This is the million-dollar question! While supplements can provide additional nutrients that your diet might lack, many people don’t actually need as many supplements as they think they do. The ideal way to get nutrients is always through whole, nutrient-dense foods. However, certain conditions—like diabetes—can sometimes require targeted supplementation, but it should always be done thoughtfully and with professional guidance.
What Different Supplements Are Good For:
Here’s a quick guide on some of the most commonly used supplements:
- Multivitamin: Useful as nutritional insurance to fill any dietary gaps. However, a balanced diet is always the first recommendation.
- Vitamin D3: Essential for bone health, mood support, and insulin regulation, especially important if you don’t get enough sun exposure.
- Iron: It helps combat fatigue and supports red blood cell production. It’s beneficial if you’re iron deficient or have anemia, which your healthcare provider can diagnose.
- Vitamin C: Supports immune health and acts as an antioxidant. Found abundantly in fruits and vegetables; supplementation is usually safe but rarely necessary in high doses.
- Calcium is crucial for bone health, particularly as we age or if we’re at risk of osteoporosis.
- Magnesium: Supports nerve function, blood sugar control, and heart health. Many people with diabetes find magnesium helpful for maintaining healthy glucose levels.
Are Supplements FDA Approved?
It’s important to understand that dietary supplements are not FDA-approved like prescription medications. Supplements are considered foods rather than medications and are regulated differently. While supplement manufacturers must follow specific standards, there is no guarantee that a supplement will do what it claims or even contain exactly what’s listed on the label.
This means you need to be extra vigilant when selecting and taking supplements.
How to Take Supplements Safely:
To safely use supplements, consider the following tips:
- Consult Your Doctor First: Always discuss your supplement intake with your healthcare team to ensure safety and prevent potential interactions with your prescribed medications.
- Start Slow: Start with lower dosages and see how your body reacts. This will help you avoid unwanted side effects or interactions.
- Choose Trusted Brands: Look for third-party tested supplements to ensure purity, potency, and quality.
- Stick to Recommended Dosages: More is not always better. Stick to label recommendations or your doctor’s advice.

Supplements to Use With Caution:
Some supplements should be approached with caution, particularly if you have prediabetes, diabetes, or other health conditions:
- Chromium: Often touted for blood sugar control, but too much can cause kidney damage.
- High-dose Niacin (Vitamin B3): May affect blood sugar control negatively.
- Herbal Supplements: Certain herbs, like ginseng or bitter melon, can interact negatively with diabetes medications, dramatically altering blood sugar levels.
Always consult your healthcare provider before starting these or any other supplements.
Why Telling Your Medical Team Matters:
Your medical providers need a complete picture of everything you’re taking, including prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, herbal remedies, and dietary supplements. Transparency is crucial because certain supplements can interact dangerously with prescribed medications, affecting their efficacy and potentially your overall health.
Being open with your healthcare provider ensures safer, more effective care.
Takeaway Thoughts:
Supplements can be beneficial in managing prediabetes and diabetes, but they are not magic bullets. It’s easy to get caught up in marketing claims and promises of quick fixes, but always remember that dietary supplements are intended to complement—not replace—a balanced, nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle habits.
When in doubt, focus on nutritious eating, regular exercise, stress reduction, and quality sleep before adding supplements.
