Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Beyond Giving Things Up

Hello, friends!

Welcome back to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time.

I meet so many folks who have given up something for their health—no more pork, sweets, alcohol, or animal products. I completely understand the commitment! In January 2009, I became a vegetarian and was so proud of myself, maybe even a little smug about it.

One day, years later, still touting my vegetarian (sometimes vegan) lifestyle, a friend jokingly said, “You’re the fattest vegetarian I’ve ever met.” I was devastated. Of course, she meant no harm, but the truth hit me hard. While I had given up meat, I was still indulging in fries, diet sodas, and apple pies. I had made sacrifices, but I hadn’t built a sustainable plan for true health.

Giving something up for your health is admirable, and I commend you! But that’s only part of the plan. Today, let’s talk about three ways to create a solid foundation that complements the sacrifices you’ve made.

1. Focus on Nutrient-Dense Foods

It’s easy to assume that eliminating one thing (like meat or sugar) will automatically lead to better health. But proper nourishment comes from adding the right foods, not just removing the “bad” ones. Instead of ultra-processed vegetarian options or sugar-free treats, focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods like:
✔️ Leafy greens, colorful veggies, and fresh fruits
✔️ Whole grains like quinoa and brown rice
✔️ Healthy fats from avocados, nuts, and olive oil
✔️ Lean protein sources like beans, lentils, and tofu

2. Move Your Body Regularly

Food choices are important, but movement is essential for managing blood sugar and overall health. Find an activity you love—whether it’s walking, yoga, dancing, or strength training—and make it a consistent part of your routine. Even 10–15 minutes a day can make a difference!

3. Be Mindful of Hidden Sugars & Processed Foods

Even if you’ve given up soda, sweets, or alcohol, sugar can sneak into your diet in unexpected ways—like in bread, condiments, or so-called “healthy” snacks. Read labels carefully and choose whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible.

Final Thoughts
Making sacrifices for your health is a great start, but real transformation happens when pairing those sacrifices with a well-rounded plan. Take a moment to reflect on your own journey—are you nourishing your body with the right foods, moving regularly, and avoiding hidden pitfalls? Small, consistent changes can make all the difference!

Until next time, take care of yourself and each other.
