Why Do I Crave Sugar When I Am Upset?

Hello, my friend,  Renee here from The Diabetic Toolbox, where our mission is to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time. This is The Daily Dose, your moment to pause, learn something new, and take one small step toward balance and better health.”

Do you ever notice how stress or sadness can trigger that craving for something sweet? That’s not weakness,  that’s chemistry.

When you’re upset, your brain looks for a quick hit of dopamine,  the feel-good hormone,  and sugar delivers it fast. But the comfort doesn’t last. Once your blood sugar crashes, your mood and energy do too.

Here’s your action step: next time that craving hits, pause and ask, What am I really craving right now? Maybe it’s connection, calm, or comfort. Try replacing the snack with a short walk, a few deep breaths, or even a quick journaling session.

Remember, sugar isn’t the solution — it’s the signal. Learn to decode it.
