Hello, Friend. Welcome to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time. We do that through education, support, and empowerment.
On today’s Blog, we’re talking about something we’ve all faced: cheat days.
A Story We All Know Too Well
It starts innocently enough: you’ve been “good” all week, sticking to your meal plan, drinking your water, moving your body. Then comes Saturday. You permit yourself to eat whatever you want: cookies, ice cream, chips and dip, cheese and crackers.
It feels fun in the moment, but the next day you’re left with the fallout, spiking blood sugar, sluggish energy, and that all-too-familiar guilt. You might even whisper to yourself, “I’ll just start again on Monday.”
Here’s the truth: cheat days don’t serve you, your wellness goals, or your spirit.
At The Diabetic Toolbox, we do not label foods as good or bad. Why? Because when you do that, you also attach guilt and shame to your choices. Instead, we encourage mindful eating and intentional questions like:
- Will this food give me energy and help me feel my best today?
- Will this food make it harder to stay within my blood sugar targets?
- Can I enjoy this food in a portion that aligns with my wellness goals?
Cheat days can have a damaging effect on diabetes management. While they may feel like a reward, the sudden spike in refined carbs and sugars can cause blood sugar levels to swing wildly, leaving you feeling sluggish, guilty, and often setting back the progress you’ve worked so hard to build. Over time, this cycle of “restriction then overindulgence” can erode both your physical health and your confidence in making balanced food choices.
Instead of relying on cheat days, asking yourself mindful questions like “Will this food give me energy today?” or “Can I enjoy this in a portion that aligns with my goals?” helps you create a joyful relationship with food. This way, you can savor the flavors you love, feel empowered in your choices, and eliminate the need for cheat days.
