How to Prevent Dry, Itchy Skin with One Simple Habit

Listen to The Diabetic Toolbox Podcast: How to Prevent Dry, Itchy Skin with One Simple Habit

Hello everyone, and welcome back to The Diabetic Toolbox, where we are on a mission to end type 2 diabetes one family at a time.

Today, we’re exploring one of the most underrated but powerful skincare practices: daily moisturizing. If you have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, this simple habit can make a huge difference in how your skin looks, feels, and heals.

But before you reach for your moisturizer, there’s another critical step that often gets overlooked—how you cleanse your skin. In Part Three of our challenge, we’re discussing how to prevent dry, itchy skin with one simple, mindful habit: gentle cleansing.

Why Dry, Itchy Skin Is So Common with Diabetes

If you’ve ever felt like your skin is constantly tight, flaky, or irritated—especially after a shower—you’re not imagining it. People living with diabetes are more likely to experience xerosis, or abnormally dry skin. Why?

Because high blood sugar levels pull fluid from your skin cells, causing the outer layer of your skin to become dehydrated. On top of that, diabetes can reduce sweat gland function, making it harder for your skin to lubricate itself naturally. The result? You’re left with dryness that can quickly become itchiness, cracking, or worse, an entry point for infection.

What’s Making It Worse?

You might be unintentionally making things worse by:

  • Taking long, hot showers
  • Using fragranced soaps or body washes
  • Rubbing your skin dry with a towel
  • Skipping moisturizer afterward

These habits strip away your skin’s natural protective oils and damage your moisture barrier, your body’s first line of defense against environmental irritants and bacteria.

✅ Tip 1: Shorten Your Shower and Use Lukewarm Water

Hot water feels amazing, but it dehydrates your skin. Keep your showers to 10 minutes or less and turn down the temperature. Lukewarm water is just as cleansing and far gentler on your skin.

Also, skip the harsh scrubbing. Use your hands or a soft washcloth instead of abrasive sponges or loofahs.

✅ Tip 2: Switch to a Soap-Free, Gentle Cleanser

Soaps that lather heavily often contain sulfates, alcohols, and fragrance additives, all of which can worsen dryness and lead to irritation.

Look for cleansers labeled:

  • “Fragrance-free”
  • “Hypoallergenic”
  • “Soap-free”
  • “For sensitive or diabetic skin”

Recommended brands include:

  • CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
  • Vanicream Gentle Cleanser
  • Dove Sensitive Skin
  • Eucerin Advanced Cleansing Body and Face Cleanser

These options will cleanse without stripping your skin’s natural oils.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Forget the Post-Cleanse Ritual

Once you’ve finished your gentle cleanse:

  1. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel; never rub.
  2. Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or ointment within three minutes to seal in hydration.

This gentle cleansing, followed by immediate moisturizing, is the most effective way to combat diabetic dry skin before it starts.

Your skin doesn’t need to be squeaky clean; it must be protected and cared for. By changing how you cleanse, you’re not only reducing irritation and dryness but also lowering your risk of infections, which is critical when managing diabetes.
