When to See Your Doctor Before Starting a New Workout Program

Listen to Episode 32 of The Diabetic Toolbox Podcast: When to See Your Doctor Before Starting a New Workout Program

I know we’ve all heard it; please see a doctor before starting a new workout plan; I also know from my own experiences and speaking with clients and the dynamic folks inside our Facebook group many of us do not heed this advice. Today, we will discuss when to see a doctor before starting a new workout program. Walking is a safe activity for most folks, but even with this gentle and restorative practice, it’s essential to get the okay from your doctor if any of the following apply to you.

1. If you are over thirty-five and have not worked out in the last 90 days or longer, in other words, going from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one is a surefire way to increase your chances of injury.

2. If you don’t exercise and you are sixty-five and over, exercise is great for any age group; if you are over sixty-five, regular exercise can help you manage your blood sugar, increase your mobility, and maintain balance. But, if you have not worked out in a while, you should see a doctor to ensure you don’t have any underlying issues and to get your doctor’s recommendations on which exercises might be best for you and how long you should work out initially.

3. You feel faint, have dizzy spells, and have chest pains, especially when exerting yourself. All these could be signs of an underlying situation that your doctor must verify and treat.

4. You have diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart trouble. If you have any of these conditions and you should see your doctor before starting any exercise program, and while I am a huge advocate for walking, and most people can begin their walking program safely, these conditions make it necessary for you to get medical clearance.

Ultimately, your doctor, coach, and personal trainer should be part of your medical team, all working together to keep you safe and assist you with reaching your wellness goals.

It may seem inconvenient to schedule an appointment to see your doctor, and many of us have so many doctor appointments that we may be tempted to just start an exercise program and check medical advice later. This could be a big mistake. You, my friend, are too important to lose, so schedule that in-person or virtual appointment and get the okay from your physician, if only to give you peace of mind.

Renee
